folio server - issues (click images to enlarge)

ok, we now have an agreed format for the redesign of the folio holder, it will take folios on the front (possibly backlit) and on the back will be some shelving for displaying magazines and books (lit) and the rest of the folios. The colour is up for grabs and the image on the folios here is just to show how the covers of the folios might join up as a mosaic. Each year we can alter the vinyl lettering which could be on a formica or similar surface. On the back there can be a display area for 3d objects and made books to be shown. On one diagram you can see the possible lines where a division could be made for portability although this issue is unlear at the moment. Dimensions 4.25 m wide 1.70 high plus a pedestal height of 20cm 60cm deep.

broadsheet catalogue (gridding up)

broadsheet is coming on, here are some ideas of the look of it with placeholder images and text for now as we await students work and the thing actually takes shape.

others..

some other thoughts here but its not there yet, gts and I are going to play with lego on thursday until we get it right. Latest thinking is combining the centerpiece with a method of showing both work and folios - nothing 'off-the-shelf' is working. In case you are just in on this we found our original round crousel fortfolio server was just too expensive to make for our budget so we are rethinking the design and purpose of it.

folio alternatives 1 >link<

Just posting alternatives to folio holder if required later. This modular one from vitra (store in london) is good because its not made from dark wood, its got colour! it carries light, its double-sided and you can arrange it how you want. Downside is the 6-8 weeks it takes to arrive, but I found one in a london dept store which is being sold off the shelf.

folio holder latest - endgame 2

Geoff prefers the lighter birch finish with pink as a the trim

folio holder latest - endgame

Still getting quotes for the folio server and we now have a route to fund the making of the structure. It will now rotate when pushed, contain no lighting but will have a high quality finish. We are trying to integrate some colour into it to contast the dark walnut-type finish, so far these will come from bands of formica(or similar) inset around the drums which go to make up the structure.

Pix Visual LED device >link<

Think of our led dot-ts but with readable data, scrolling text and a pov function (have to see it all on link) Its about 4" round and can connect via usb to a pc to program. Could be good for inside the show to display text usure of battery life at the moment. Can buy in the UK for £39 each.

buy in uk here.. http://www.kjglobal.co.uk/acatalog/Visual_Communication.html

beer me 1 >link<

Need input on ideas for serving drinks - we will have a bottled bar but waiter/ess service is what we would prefer but how can this work? Also here a mini bar possibility for the show view nights.

looking for one of these to hire in uk >link<

these are called 'vms' or variable message signs. Do you know where we can hire one cheaply in the uk?

broadsheet catalogue (early ideas)

ok so andreas will probably kill me for letting you see this but here is a sneaky look at some of the unfinished ideas for the broadsheet cover. I think half of the elements on this cover have allready been rearranged and changed including the text.

whats in the show?

Just in case your joining us now and trying to make sense of the many blog entries there are, so far the show will have the following..

1. name of show is 'brighter' (brighter students, influence of using lights in show and strong colour).
2. website for the show featuring student work this will be both online and on our imac g5's in the show space.
3. video showreell shown in the space via plasma.
4. rotating carousel to serve the student's portfolios to the public.
5. 20 metre by 2.5 metre graphic wall showing samples of the student's work.
6. 30 page broadsheet catalogue/introduction to graphic design at chelsea including proff. commissions and features.
7. l.e.d. signage outside the space made from 120 osram dot-it lights.
8. free drinks to those invited to the gdcomm show and the friends and family event.
9. 37 students ready to show their folios to industry and public.

pixel wall replaced by graphic

The idea for the pixel wall was originally based on some plans for a diy dancefloor we found on the net and was to display moving pixel blocks of colour or perhaps text. However the varying lighting levels during showtime and the lack of space to scroll explanations of projects has meant the show srteering group dropping it in favour of show information and giant graphic image on the front and on the back will be a series of circular holes from which people can take a broadsheet catalogue on the way out of the show. We still have the possibility of scrolling led signage elsewhere in the show and of course the dot-it led lights on the outside of the triangle space. This will give the oppertunity to make a big statement to introduce the show.

Image below shows old pixel wall idea (new one to follow).
